In February 2011, StarCraft, a military-themed sci-fi video game, held a competition called iCCup Star League, which attracted 56 players from around the world. BTCsportsbet.com was one of the sponsors, and the prize pool contained just over $1,000. The first prize was $500, while the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th winners received 25 bitcoins each.
Charles Hoskinson, founder of the crypto-currency Cardano, experienced the event first-hand: "The tokens were worthless. When I entered the crypto-currency space, we used to trade on spreadsheets. bitcoin was below the dollar. It wasn't uncommon for people to say, well, you know, I'll send you 10,000 of these things because I don't know if they'll be worth anything or not."
At the time, bitcoin was worth $1.65 and the total price of all BTC on offer was $41.25. At today's price, those same 25 BTC now represent a colossal sum of $1,075,000! The lucky winners of these BTCs were Sziky, Kolll, Hejek and Jumper. We really wonder whether they kept their bitcoins or not.
