On 3 January 2009, the history of the virtual currency took off with the appearance of the "Genesis Block", the initial block of the Bitcoin network. Associated with a reward of 50 BTC, today estimated at around 2,300,000 dollars, this founding block has remained untouchable since its creation. Over time, the block reward has decreased, now standing at 6.25 BTC and set to fall to 3.125 BTC during the regular halving process, currently scheduled for 18 April 2024.
At the heart of the Genesis Block is a message based on the title of an article in the British newspaper The Times on 3 January 2009.
This content, sometimes perceived as a criticism of the conventional financial system, adds a philosophical dimension to this birth.
Every year, this event is celebrated by Satoshi Nakamoto's followers, who send bitcoins to the address that eternally holds the original 50 BTC. Today, this address holds nearly 72.75 BTC, 22.75 of which have been deposited in tribute to the Genesis Block.
Despite the uncertainties and debates raised by bitcoin, which is challenging traditional financial structures, its potential as a secure, decentralised alternative in an era of volatile traditional markets remains undeniable. This fascination with bitcoin is reflected in the eager anticipation of institutional giants for ETF approval, and underlines the growing interest in the 'King' beyond technological innovation.
On the eve of its fifteenth anniversary, bitcoin continues to resonate, not only as an alternative financial system, but also as a driver of economic and social change. This development bears witness to the emergence of new values in an ever-changing financial world.
